The Amarok developers have released the first beta for version 2.1 (code-named Nuliajuk) of their popular free media player for Linux, Unix, MacOS X and Windows systems. The beta release includes a number of bug fixes and new features. The links in the lyrics applet are now clickable and open in the default external web browser. Play lists will now always display the current song, even if other songs are added to the play list. Several bugs in the File Browser were also fixed and it now remembers its sort order.

The release also features a new advanced play list layout editor for users to create and modify their own play list layouts. The layouts for the play lists are defined in XML and a number of default layouts are included. The beta supports cue sheets and bookmarks, allowing users to save and share their favourite online services, such as web radio stations. The Phonon multimedia system can now also be configured directly by Amarok and Amarok URLs, which allows any view to be bookmarked and retrieved again later.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes. Amarok 2.1 beta 1 is available to download. Users that experience any bugs are asked to report them so that they can be fixed before the final release.
