Alfresco Alfresco has announced an update to the open source Alfresco ECM (enterprise content management) Community 3.4e edition which replaces the jBPM business process management component with a preview of Alfresco's own Activiti BPM workflow engine. Activiti, which began development at Alfresco nearly a year ago, implements the BPMN 2.0 standard for process management.

BPM in Alfresco can be used to control and manage the flow of documents within a content management system, allowing, for example, complex review and approval processes to be defined and implemented. The company is pitching the preview of the integration at early adopters who want to see how the change will affect them.

The replacement of jBPM with Activiti is the last step in a process, begun last year, of replacing LGPL components within Alfresco with Apache-licensed alternatives. Alfresco Community 3.4e is available to download for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, 64-bit Linux and Mac OS X. Source code is available from the project's subversion repository. Activiti can be downloaded from that project's own web site.
