Alfresco has announced it has a draft implementation of the CMIS specification available. CMIS, the Content Management Interoperability Services, is a specification backed by Alfresco, IBM, EMC, Microsoft, OpenText, Oracle and SAP. Its aim is to provide a standardised way of accessing content management systems in a similar way to how databases standardised on SQL in the 1980's.

The draft CMIS specification sets out to deliver common REST or web service APIs that can be implemented by any vendor. This, in time, should allow developers who want to use enterprise content management (ECM) products in their applications to work with the CMIS APIs and let users plug in their preferred ECM back-end.

Alfresco's draft CMS implementation includes support for CMIS REST and web services, support for the CMIS query language and a test suite for compliance and compatibility testing. It is available from the Alfresco Labs web site.
