Alfresco has published a new version of its content-management system for enterprises. Alfresco Enterprise Edition 3.0 combines document management with web-content management and Web 2.0 functions such as blogs, wikis, and discussion forums. A new feature is the inclusion of a draft CMIS (Content Management Interoperability Services) implementation designed to make it easier to exchange data and develop applications for different content-management systems. Enterprises that rely on Microsoft Office software are likely to welcome its implementation of Microsoft's SharePoint protocol, which was published in the spring as part of Microsoft's conforming to a European Commission rulingPDF.

Alfresco Enterprise Edition 3.0 also incorporates the new Alfresco Share, which builds a bridge between document management and groupware to make cooperating on documents in virtual teams easier. Alfresco brought out the new version of its enterprise software solution in beta in the summer, as Alfresco Labs 3, and explicitly positioned it as an alternative to SharePoint. The software will be available to subscription customers from this Friday, and Alfresco has already put up a trial version on its download page.

Alfresco will also be hosting a webinar on Alfresco Enterprise Edition 3.0 on November 6th.
