Alfresco Logo Alfresco has announced the availability of version 3.4 of its Enterprise Edition of its content management system. The latest release of the commercial version of its CMS is aimed at providing a platform for social content management by making it easier for users to collaborate and share their content as quickly and easily as possible.

Alfresco Enterprise Edition 3.4 features enhancements to the user-interface (UI) aimed at making document sharing more social and, like version 3.4 of the company's open source Community Edition, it includes Web Quick Start, a set of templates that can be used for building content-rich sites on top of Alfresco Share. Using Microsoft’s Office SharePoint Protocol and a new API integration with Google Docs, the new Office-to-Web Framework allows users to author documents in their standard office suite, to collaborate using Alfresco or Google Docs, and then publish to the web. Other changes include native support for content replication and new DocLib portlets that allow for integration with various enterprise portals, such as Liferay, Quickr and Confluence.

Discussing the release, Alfresco CTO John Newton said, "Social Content Management is where the capabilities of social business systems and traditional enterprise content management (ECM) meet," adding that, "It is communication and collaboration with a business purpose and it requires a platform that can deliver content for discussion and engagement that then captures the results of that discussion. Alfresco Enterprise 3.4 is that platform". A table comparing the Enterprise and Community Editions is available on the Alfresco site.

Further information about the release can be found on the What's new in Alfresco Enterprise 3.4 web page and in the official press release. A free 30 day trial of Alfresco Enterprise Edition 3.4 is available to download from the company's site. Version 3.4 of the LGPL licensed community edition was released in early October of last year.
