Alfresco logo Alfresco has announced the availability of version 4.0 of the Community Edition of its open source enterprise content management system (CMS). The new version includes a number of user interface enhancements aimed at making it easier for novices to learn as well as additional features for users; the company says that it is "the most significant release of the platform to date".

Alfresco Community 4 improves overall system performance and includes a new index server based on Apache Solr. Enhancements to clustering include increased reliability and scalability, as well as the addition of support for clustered CIFS (Common Internet File System).

Other changes include drag-and-drop support in HTML5-enabled web browsers, Google Docs integration for collaborating in real-time and mobile support using free iOS apps. Developer tools for creating social, content-rich applications have also been improved; they can be used to publish content and updates to sites such as YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Flickr.

Further information about this major update can be found in the official release announcement, on the Alfresco wiki and in the release notes. Alfresco Community 4.0 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux from the project's wiki; documentation is provided. The Community Edition of Alfresco is released under the LGPL.
