Mobitest logo Akamai Chief Product Architect Guy Podjarny has announced that the company's Mobitest tool is now available as open source. Mobitest is a testing agent for benchmarking the performance of mobile web pages, originally created by Blaze. Blaze was acquired by the Massachusetts-based content delivery network and cloud services provider in February of this year.

The test client supports iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices and uses the default web browsers included with each OS to run its benchmarks – Podjarny notes that, while the iOS and Android versions are "quite mature", the BlackBerry one is "still very much an Alpha version". These benchmarks include total page load times, individual request headers and timings, and can be run over any network connection, such as Wi-Fi or 3G. The tool is available as a "mobitest-agent" app that is installed to a mobile device and polls a WebPagetest server; the results of these tests can be viewed using the WebPagetest user interface.

More details about the open sourcing of Mobitest can be found in a post on the Blaze blog. Source code for Mobitest is hosted on Google Code and is made available under a BSD licence. In addition to the open source offering, the company offers a free hosted version of Mobitest for evaluation or for those who don't want to set up their own installations.
