Adobe to acquire Day Software for $240M

Adobe has announced that it is to acquire Swiss company Day Software, makers of content management systems, and Apache contributor, for $240M. Day Software is a proprietary software company which has participated in the development of, and donated code to, Apache projects such as Apache Jackrabbit, an implementation of JSR170 - Content Repository API for Java, and Apache Sling, a web framework for content-centric applications.

Adobe's announcement does not mention Day Software's open source initiatives, but focusses on CRX - the company's proprietary content repository and CQ5 WCM - web content management, CQ5 DAM - digital asset management and CQ5 SoCo - social collaboration, platforms built on top of CRX. Adobe says the acquisition will allow them to offer "comprehensive web content management" as part of their enterprise solutions. Day's CEO, Erik Hansen said " “We are excited to join Adobe and combine our expertise in WCM with technologies that create and deliver rich online and offline experiences leveraging the ubiquity of Flash and PDF".

Hansen will be reporting to Rob Tarkoff, Adobe VP of the Digital Enterprise Solutions, and the Day product line will be integrated into the same division. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of the year, with the companies operating independently until then.
