Adobe AIR to arrive on Android later this year
Adobe has confirmed that it will deliver its cross-platform Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) environment for Google's open source Android mobile operating system by the end of this year. Originally announced in February, Adobe's AIR for mobile devices is based on version 10.1 of the company's Flash Player, which Adobe says is optimised "for high performance on mobile devices". It enables developers to build web applications that don't require a browser and that run like standalone client applications using HTML, JavaScript, Flash and ActionScript.
According to a company spokesman Stefan Offerman, Adobe AIR for Andriod will bring rich applications to Android that support multi-touch, gesture inputs, accelerometer sensing, screen orientation sensing and geolocation using a device's built-in GPS functionality. While AIR for Android is still currently only available as part of a beta program, mobile phone manufacturer Motorola has already announced support for it.
