Adobe AIR 1.0 and Flex 3.0 ready to roll

Adobe has wrapped up its AIR 1.0 run time environment and Flex 3.0 application framework and made them available to download from its website. AIR, standing for Adobe Integrated Runtime, should enable developers to program local software using web technologies. AIR includes a Flash player and an HTML, CSS and JavaScript parser which uses WebKit. AIR is available for Windows XP, Vista and 2000 and Mac OS X. The Linux version is currently under development, Adobe has not, however, named a release date.

Also finished is Flex, Adobe's framework for professional Flash applications. Apparently as a reaction to Microsoft's Silverlight, Adobe has released the source code for Flex as open source. Adobe is making the Flex SDK available free of charge. Flex Builder 3 Standard costs €213, the Professional version €594. The SDK is available for Windows XP, Vista and 2000 and Mac OS X, the Standard and Professional versions for XP, Vista and Mac OS X only.
