Actuate, which is instrumental in developing the open source Eclipse BIRT (Business Intelligence Reporting Tools) project, has announced that it has acquired Spanish company Quiterian. Quiterian provides software to analyse and visualise structured as well as unstructured data. Actuate plans to integrate the acquired products into its ActuateOne business intelligence platform under the banner BIRT Analytics.

Quinterian mostly serves customers from public and private organisations in the telecommunications, e-commerce, financial and medical industries. Several game companies also use their data analytics products. According to the announcement, the Quinterian team is being integrated into Actuate's staff and Quinterian CEO Josep Arroyo will become VP of BIRT Analytics. In his new role, Arroyo will be responsible for data mining and analytics strategy as well as research and development of new technology. The acquisition has already been completed and both parties have agreed to keep the financial details confidential.
