The latest version of the AbiWord open source word processor has been released. AbiWord 2.8 is an extensive update to the GPLv3 licensed and GTK based word processor. The major highlight of the release is improved collaboration support which allows multiple authors to work on the same document through a new service abicollab.net. The collaboration is enhanced with support for annotation and comments within documents.

Smart quote functionality has been added, which finally adds the code behind a long existing option in AbiWord's preferences. In a similar vein, the SVG support in AbiWord has been replaced with what the developers call "True" SVG Support; this feature replaces the low quality SVG image support and allows SVG files to be included at full quality in documents. For better overviews of documents, AbiWord 2.8 now supports a multi-page view of the page layout.

Other improvements include better OpenDocument format support, thanks to a grant from Dutch non-profit organisation NLnet, improved OOXML/.docx support, funded through the Google Summer of Code programme, and a new printing framework which increases the quality of Postscript and PDF output.

Full details of the changes are in the release notes. Abiword can be downloaded from the AbiSource web site, with binaries for Windows and Linux. Source code is also available from the same page.
