AT&T joins the OpenStack project

AT&T logo At it annual Developer Summit in Las Vegas, AT&T has announced that it has joined the OpenStack initiative, making it the first US telecommunications services provider to become a member of the open source infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) project. The company is a veteran of hosting and cloud services, and has already been participating in OpenStack for more than a year.

According to AT&T CTO John Donovan, the company is already running OpenStack and has infrastructure dedicated to the open source platform in three data centers located in Texas, California and New Jersey. "We plan to more than double the number of our centers with open-source capabilities in 2012," said Donovan.

OpenStack logo OpenStack was launched in July 2010 by Rackspace and NASA with the goal of creating a cloud computing platform that can meet the needs of both public and private clouds, while also being highly scalable and easy to implement. OpenStack core project's include the Compute (Nova), Object Storage (Swift) and Image Service (Glance) projects. A number of other projects to address, for example, networking, authentication and security, are currently in development.

Over the past year and a half the Apache-licensed project has gained momentum with increasing support from companies and individual contributors alike. The OpenStack community currently consists of over 2,200 participants and more than 140 technology companies, including HP, Dell, Cisco, Intel and Citrix.
