Ubuntu Logo Ubuntu project sponsor Canonical has announced that its Ubuntu Linux distribution will be pre-loaded on new ASUS Eee PC series netbooks. According to Canonical, the Taiwan-based computer manufacturer began shipping three new Ubuntu-based Eee PC models through its sales channels on 1 June.

Three ASUS Eee PC models – 1001PXD, 1011PX and 1015PX – will ship with Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" pre-installed instead of Windows 7 Starter; the latest version of Ubuntu is 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" from the end of April. Firefox and the Adobe Flash will also be installed by default.

All of the netbooks have a 10-inch 1024x600 display. The 1011PX and 1015PX both feature dual-core Intel Atom N570 processors, while the 1001PXD only has a single core Atom N455. However, at the time of writing, none of the product pages mention Ubuntu and instead recommend Windows 7.

Commenting on the announcement, ASUS Product Director Stanley Chang said: "Since its creation, the ASUS Eee PC has provided, and continues to provide the best cloud computing experience to users, while Ubuntu is an open source OS renowned for its customizability and stability," adding that "To fulfil the various needs of a diverse market and user base, the strategic alliance with Ubuntu is absolutely a win-win cooperation." Canonical says that "Many more models will be made available throughout the year."
