Computer manufacturer ASUS has published the Linux source code for its Seashell line of netbooks. Previous to the companies Seashell line up, ASUS netbooks were often available with Linux as an option for the pre-installed operating system (OS), usually at a lower price. With the release of its current Seashell models, the 1008HA and the 1005HA, however, Windows XP has been and still is the only pre-installed OS option available.

To date there has not been an offical Seashell series netbook that ships with the open source OS. Several sites are speculating that the release of the source code could be signalling the release of an Eee PC running Moblin. The final version of Moblin 2.0 was released at the end of September and, according to the developers, it has been tested on both the 1008HA and the 1005HA. ASUS, however, has yet to make any official announcements.

The Linux source code is available to download for the 1008HA and 1005HA. The source consists of one large file approximately 2.2 GB in size that has been split by ASUS into five separate smaller downloads for each model. If you own either the 1008HA or the 1005HA and feel like downloading, compiling the source and installing it, please feel free to let us know in our forums what you find.

Update - With the source code as distributed ASUS appears to be complying with the requirements of the GPL by supplying the code including the patches they applied. However, although the source code appears to be complete, there are no build scripts or configuration files, making it difficult to reconstruct the code into a working operating system.
