AMD to contribute to MeeGo development

At this year's MeeGo Conference currently taking place in Dublin, processor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced that it has joined the MeeGo open source project. MeeGo is a Linux-based distribution for various mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, netbooks and In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) systems, that is the result of the February decision to merge Intel's Moblin platform and Nokia's Maemo platform under the aegis of the Linux Foundation.

AMD says that it will provide engineering expertise aimed at helping to "establish the technical foundations for next-generation mobile platforms and embedded devices". Discussing the announcement, AMD Corporate VP of Software Development Ben Bar-Haim said, "MeeGo represents an exciting, open-source mobile operating system we expect to be adopted by mobile and embedded device makers over time," adding that, "We are glad to provide engineering resources to joint industry efforts like MeeGo and expect that this operating system will help drive our embedded plans and create expanded market opportunities for our forthcoming Accelerated Processing Units".

According to AMD Operating System Research Center Director and Linux Foundation Board Member Chris Schläger, "upstream first" is important to his company, as is the development of existing open source projects. AMD already works on a number of open source projects, such as the Linux kernel, and is a Gold Member of the Linux Foundation.
