Having pulled it from X.Org Server 1.10 at the last moment, the X.org developers are taking another look at RandR 1.4, the X resize, rotate and reflect extension. It's now hoped that it will make it into X.Org Server 1.11, due in August. Long time X and Debian developer, Keith Packard, has posted an entry on the X.org mailing list calling for a protocol review.

RandR 1.4 was originally scheduled for X.Org Server 1.9 but failed to make it and was then pulled from 1.10 at the last moment due to dissatisfaction with the client interface.

Version 1.4 of Resize and Rotate promises per-CRTC pixmaps and the possibility of support from NVIDIA's proprietary Linux graphics driver. At present, Linux users with NVIDIA cards (NVIDIA is estimated to hold roughly a 30% share of the graphics market) must use the proprietary NVIDIA settings utility. With NVIDIA's driver with RandR support, screen resolution could be adjusted in a more integrated fashion from the desktop.
