At the Zend PHP Conference taking place in California, Zend has announced a free PHP cloud development platform, phpcloud.com. This consists of two integrated components: the Zend Developer Cloud, a development sandbox and set of tools for creating PHP web applications, and Zend Application Fabric, an application platform based on Amazon Web Services and Zend's own technologies. Once completed, web apps developed on phpcloud.com can then be exported to other cloud platforms for deployment; supported platforms include, in addition to that from Amazon, IBM SmartCloud, Rackspace and Red Hat. Apps can also be deployed in private clouds using Zend Server.

The Zend Developer Cloud provides a developer sandbox, PHP runtime and extensions, the Zend Framework and many tools to aid development, including code-tracing for real-time debugging. The Developer Cloud integrates with Zend Studio and also with the Eclipse PHP Developer Tools. Andi Gutmans, CEO of Zend, told internetnews.com that there will also be an open source SDK to enable other IDE projects and vendors to connect to the PHP developer cloud. The system is designed with a "major emphasis" on collaboration: GIT integration allows for source code sharing and management, and snapshots can be used to share the entire application and environment.

The Zend Application Fabric is based on Zend Server technologies and is designed to be offer high performance with fast application response times and to minimise the use of resources. The system supports on-demand scaling to cope with demand fluctuation.
