Windows Live Spaces Microsoft has announced that it has already migrated more than half a million Spaces blogs to the open source WordPress blogging and publishing platform. In a post on the Inside Windows Live blog, Microsoft Windows and Windows Live Division Director Dharmesh Mehta says that, in addition to the already migrated blogs, "nearly half a million additional Windows Live customers have decided to create entirely new blogs on WordPress.com".

At the end of September, the company confirmed that, rather than investing in its own service, its 30 million Live Spaces blogging service users would be "upgraded" to WordPress' free blogging software. The company says that users will have until March of next year to migrate their blogs to WordPress.com – six months from the initial announcement.

WordPress is an open source blogging tool supported by the WordPress Foundation and is licensed under the GPL v2. The WordPress.com site provides a remote hosted version of WordPress, such as that used for the Microsoft migration, while WordPress.org provides support and download for a slightly more flexible self-hosted version.
