10gen, the company behind the NoSQL database MongoDB, has announced free-of-charge online training courses for the product starting in October. Teaching the first two announced courses in the 10gen Education programme are 10gen CEO and MongoDB lead developer, Dwight Merriman, 10gen's Director of Consulting Engineering, Richard Kreuter and the company's VP of Education, Andrew Erlichson.

Merriman will be teaching a course entitled "MongoDB for DBAs", while Kreuter and Erlichson will be covering "MongoDB for Developers". To deliver the courses, 10gen is partnering with the edX initiative founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MongoDB is an AGPLv3-licensed, document-oriented NoSQL database system that stores data in a JSON-inspired format; it has been developed by 10gen since before its first public release in 2009.

Update 25-09-2012: 10gen tell us that it already has seen 4,396 enrolments from 3,487 students in the first 24 hours since announcing the programme.
