Re: Open source, closed mind? 06 October 2009 22:50
Hi Richard,
I agree that any company that claims to be 'open source' had better
have some open source software they produce - there are some out
there that do not. I also think we agree that an open source company
better have decent open source software available, and manage the
project well.
When it comes to terminology we are going to dilute things either
way. Many open core companies are doing a lot of work to educate
mainstream markets about what open source is. Forcing these companies
to describe themselves as 'open core' actually dilutes the message to
the complete newcomers (which is most of the general population).
My basic disagreement with your perspective is that, in parts, you
seem to be applying a free software viewpoint to open source projects
you don't participate in. In my experience the statement 'mixed
source, or "open core", solution can work as a disincentive to a
developer community' does not carry any weight. An open core model
allows us to have 5x times the developers we would have under other
open source business models. Without these developers we would have
less open source code available to our community, and be of less
value. There are many things that can work as a disincentive to a
developer community and most of them are mistakes that any project
can make (commercial, open core, or not).
In my mind one of the main differences between the free software and
open source movements is pragmatism. An open source community will
form around useful open source code. If the management of the project
is bad the community will leave or fork the code. It is a simple as
that. Free software advocates making negative comments about the
community being potentially unhappy, when the community is not, and
more importantly when the community does not share their ideals, just
seems preachy and irrelevant.
