To address a couple of points there.
As I say, you can make money from the creation of digital property in
many ways, but it may not be directly from that creation (it might
be: people will pay you to create more stuff). You will perhaps say:
in the absence of such direct incentives, why bother creating stuff?
And I think the answer is: people *like* creating stuff (see my reply
citing Flickr, YouTube, blogs etc.). It's part of what makes us
human. We don't need to be paid to do it.
The fact that some people have been paid huge sums in recent years
doesn't mean that it's either necessary or even the best way of
getting art made. I don't know whether you've seen this TED talk:
“Dan Pink on the surprising science of motivation”

It lays out the scientific evidence for why paying people to be
creative isn't a good idea: they are generally less creative than
they would have been without payment..
So I think the basic idea that we *must* pay people to create is
actually wrong, and that we need to decouple the creation from ways
of making money from that creation – which is what my original piece
was about.
