For users who wish to fully migrate a file system from Ext3 to Ext4,
there is no getting around going through the process of backing up
data and creating a new file system.

Won't it be okay to convert an ext3 filesystem to ext4 with extents
enabled. And then, backup your /home to an external hdd, then rm -rf
~, and then cp -a /mnt/ext/home/ /home/$USER ??
This way, the same data will be re-written to the new ext4 with
extents.
Same would apply to all packages installed on the root fs. As and
when packages upgrade, they will delete and write new files, which
will use extents.
I don't think we really need to go the format way.
