A reasonable Approach for End-Users and Computing 07 September 2009 23:31
Notwithstanding passive-aggressive control freaks like Richard
Stallman (see openbsd.org for their songs), we live in an imperfect
world, where powerful forces such as governments and multi-national
corporations control a vast portion of our lifelong amenities and
even our sufficient conditions for survival. There are bigger things
to worry about than some media companies like Apple and Walt Disney
trying to protect their earned profit stream.
Yes, DRM is moving toward a rental model - the entire IP/software
world, including Freeware and GNU applications are moving in that
direction. And it is DRM which prevents any Linux or BSD distro from
becoming dominant enough on the desktop to make a difference to media
companies. In this sense, Microsoft has won the war while losing
some battles.
As a pragmatist I legitimately take the best of all worlds. I have no
need to break DRM schemes. It is not even a valid economic argument.
Right now, the Internet has replaced newspapers and TV in my life. I
feel more empowered by this shift. I now choose when and where I
watch what I watch. All with minimal advertising being shoved down
my throat. I never did like cliff-hangers as a kid in the local movie
house anyway.
And, forward thinking Netflix, Redbox, etc. provide me with $1.00
rentals of DVD's. If I buy an older DVD I watch once (I then flush
out to Rasputin's to watch more). I am overwhelmed by multimedia, by
music, by DVD's. I need less not more. So, I use my older combo
DVD/VHS player/recorder for its purpose, and Windows XP for its
purpose. I see no immediate reason to change. I understand the
Intel/AMD/Microsoft profit models so I can easily resist upgrading to
the latest duo-quatro this and that. And I have found some really
great music downloads from some great bands who have eschewed the
labels. The media companies are fighting a losing battle. I have
more respect for self-publishing artists than anything else.
And I understand Open Source. That's why my server farm has run
openbsd/gentoo linux, Apache 2, etc. for the last 12 years without
any stop. That's why I know more about Openoffice than i do MS
Office.
Hell, everybody in their right mind who didn't have Vista shoved down
their throat when buying a new computer avoided it. Every church
group uses google stuff for posting of rosters, stats and such. Who
really cares about DRM except those who are committed to illegality
in general?
Every time most pragmatists are going to go with what simply works
well and is convenient without glitches. That why I use my
blackberry and my wife her iphone. My son is more interested in
texting and receiving here and now photos from his friends, no more
PS3, TV, or watching any video more than once.
I see GNU software (especially GPL3) as having as many or more
restrictions than proprietary software. They are just at the
opposite third standard deviations end of a normal curve. And I
happen to think Bill Gates is doing a helluva lot more for humankind
than Stallman (notwithstanding his MIT base).
