Perhaps its inappropriate to term these different GUI frameworks as
Linux user interfaces. They are separately a phone/device GUI, a
netbook/tablet GUI and a desktop GUI framework. Each has a different
set of demands and limitations. Though I am usually one to rant and
rail against the fragmentation in one of these areas, the desktop,
with too many players (KDE, Gnome) in the GUI camp and package
managers (rpm, debian, etc.), in this case I think its refreshing to
take a step away from the usual desktop paradigm and try to rethink
these smaller more constrained device GUI's.
Example from another OS, would we really need the power and
complexity of Windows Explorer on our phone? Well, that's an easy
one! Apple's answer to that question is obvious in their wonderful
iPhone/iPodTouch interface.
So, my take is there may be three totally separate future interfaces
on top of whatever the underlying os is, spanning the devices from
ultra small(including phones, cameras, home automation devices), to
the mid (netbooks, ebooks, enewspapers), and the mature desktops.
