Ubuntu 7.10 – first test of Gutsy Gibbon

Dr. Oliver Diedrich

Ubuntu has made a reputation for itself as a solid, user-friendly Linux distribution. We've been taking a look at the new version 7.10, codenamed Gutsy Gibbon.

The reason for Ubuntu's popularity is the combination of Debian GNU/Linux with features developed specifically for Ubuntu. Debian's strengths – stability, community support and high performance package management with a huge range of easy to install software – are retained, but Debian's weaknesses – releases containing software which is already obsolete, complicated installation and poor default configuration, especially for desktop users – are corrected. Ubuntu helps beginners get started quickly, while allowing Linux professionals to immerse themselves in the intricacies of Debian.

In addition to completely up-to-date software – kernel 2.6.22, GNOME 2.20, Firefox 2.0, OpenOffice 2.3 – version 7.10 also includes improvements to hardware support. Wireless network chipsets from Broadcom, and many USB Wi-Fi adapters should work out of the box. There is also better support for using dual monitors.

On graphics cards with 3D acceleration Ubuntu also activates the 3D desktop extension Compiz by default. Tracker is a new desktop search tool which searches for a given search term both locally and on the internet. The AppArmor security extension starts by default. A Xen kernel is included, but must be installed separately from the Universe community repository.
