Selected events in the UK and elsewhere in October
The H Community Calendar presents the coming month's events in various open source, development, Linux, Unix and other communities, from multi-day conferences to user group get-togethers.

1 October - Data - London
Who: Big Data London
What: 14th Big Data meetup – the meetup has teamed up with the O'Reilly Strata Conference and will take place on the first evening of the conference. Attendees do not have to be registered for the conference, but can get a discount for it.

2 October - Hacks/Hackers - Brighton
Who: Hacks/Hackers Brighton
What: Hacks and Hackers Meetup – Following the relaunch of the Channel 4 News website, James Box – UX designer for Clearleft – will reflect on the successes and failures of its 'responsive redesign'. Andy Hume will explain and showcase some of the responsive design work going on at the Guardian.

5 & 6-7 October - PHP - Manchester
Who: PHPNW
What: PHP NW 2012 – an annual conference run by passionate volunteers for the community to come together and talk about PHP. The conference will be preceded by a tutorial day on Friday.

8 October - Ruby - London EC1V

What: Regular monthly meetup – after a talk about "Beautiful command-line interface design" from John Leach and one other talk, details to be confirmed, the meetup will continue in informal fashion in the pub.

What: User group meeting – the topic for October is "The Future of the Web Platform", with a talk by Alex Russell on "Web Components & MDV: The Web Platform Gets Serious," followed by an open discussion.

Who: Silicon Corridor Linux User Group
What: A regular social evening for Linux users in the Reading area.

10 October - Java - London WC1E
Who: London Java Community
What: "Getting there from here: Java, Scala and Service Orientation at the Guardian" – technical leads within the Guardian will discuss their experiences of having a hybrid Scala and Java codebase and being in the middle of a migration from a monolith architecture to one that is more service-orientated.

What: PyCon Ireland – the premier Irish open source conference for python programming enthusiasts, professionals and students.

What: Java 8 Lambdas hackday – The latest of the LJC's series of Adopt-a-JSR hackdays will be led by Brian Goetz, a key member of the Oracle Java Team, who will give a presentation introducing lambdas. The event will be hosted at the Park Plaza Victoria as part of JAX London.

What: 2012 Mozilla Festival – This year's theme is "Making, Freedom and the Web". A long weekend with five goals: to make, learn, imagine, design and fuel. More details are available on the wiki.

What: London Perl Workshop – the theme for this year's event is "25 Years of Perl", and will focus on the way Perl is used in the commercial world and the strength of Perl for development in an enterprise environment.
