Selected events coming up in the UK and elsewhere in May

The H Community Calendar presents the coming month's events in various open source, development, Linux, Unix and other communities, from multi-day conferences to user group get-togethers.

May 5 - PHP - London SE1

Who: PHP London
What: A regular monthly meeting with a talk on searching with Solr.

May 7 - Linux - Southampton

Who: Hampshire Linux User Group
What: Monthly meeting at Southampton University
Cost: Free / Register beforehand if you need WiFi


May 9 - Ruby - London EC1V

Who: London Ruby User Group
What: An evening of "Ruby Golf" where teams of 4-8 people will atempt to solve nine short Ruby golf holes in as few characters as possible. Holes landscaped with RSpec. Bring your laptop.

What: JavaScript Game Engines, Part 2

May 11 - Linux - Reading

Who: Silicon Corridor Linux User Group
What: A regular social evening for Linux users in the Reading area.

Who: London Scala Users' Group
What: Design Patterns in Scala - a whirlwind tour of design patterns in Scala, including (but not limited to) Utility Belt, Pimp-my-library, algebraic data types, Concept and Cake.

NEW May 12 - Open Source - London WC2E

Who: British Computer Society Open Source Specialist Group (BCS OSSG)
What: Open Source and the UK - Liam Maxwell, Councillor and lead member for policy and performance at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, will give a talk for the Open Source Specialist Group (OSSG) about Open Source and the UK

What: Debian Packaging Tutorial - A one day course in packaging software and managing packages on Debian.

What: OpenTech 2011 - an informal, low cost, one-day conference on slightly different approaches to technology, transport and democracy.

June 21/22 - Accessibility - Birmingham

Who: DevCSI and Fullmeasure
What: Accessibility Hackdays – a two day workshop bringing developers, accessibility (a11y) users and experts together to hack on ideas, prototypes and mashups, while exploring the challenges in providing usable accessibility.
