The H Community Calendar – February 2011

Selected events coming up in the UK and elsewhere in February

The H Community Calendar presents the coming month's events in various open source, development, Linux, Unix and other communities, from multi-day conferences to user group get-togethers.

Note: Unless stated, events listed take place in the evening.



2nd-3rd February - Cloud - London EC2

What: Cloud Expo Europe 2011 - a two day exhibition of Cloud related technology, covering storage, security and open source in the cloud. Includes speakers from a wide range of companies and organisations. The event is co-located with Open Source Expo. The H is a media sponsor of this event.

Cost: Free if pre-registered , £15 on the door


5th-6th February - Free Software / Open Source - Brussels

Who: FOSDEM (Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting)

What: FOSDEM is a free and non-commercial event organised by the community for the community. The goal is to provide Free Software and Open Source developers and communities a place to meet and get in touch with other developers, be informed of the latest developments, attend talks and presentations and promote the development of Free Software and Open Source solutions.

Cost: Free (no registration necessary)


7th February - Ruby - London EC1V

Who: London Ruby User Group (LRUG)

What: The annual lightning talk evening with talks in 20x20 (20 slides, 20 seconds per slide) format. Talks will cover test frameworks, Ruby search systems, a BASIC interpreter in Ruby, processing books, audio, Rails, Redis and more.

8th February - Ajax - London EC1V

Who: London Ajax User Group

What: Using HTML5 Sensibly and how to cheat by using the web. A talk from Christian Heilmann.

8th February - Drupal - London SW1E

Who: Drupal London

What: Drupal Drop in - An evening discussing "Useful modules" beyond the usual components used in the Drupal CMS.

Cost: Free/ Pre-register


9th February - Scala - London EC1V

Who: London Scala User Group

What: Cloud computing with Scala and GridGain - A talk and live demonstration of implementing a MapReduce application with Scala and the GridGain middleware.

Cost: Free/ Pre-register


9th February - Linux - Reading

Who: Silicon Corridor Linux Users Group

What: A regular social evening for Linux users in the Reading area

Cost: Free


10th February - Hardware - London W12

Who: OSHUG (Open Source Hardware users Group)

What: Talks on the BBC Computer Literacy Project, BBC Domesday Project and "Standing on the shoulders of hackers"

Cost: Free / Pre-register


16th February - Open - Central London

Who: mashup* event

What: Being Open '11 - A half day event to explore new cost-effective ways of approaching product development, service delivery using open platforms, open data and open development.

Cost: £125+VAT (Entrepeneurs/Startups and Charities £50+VAT)


17th February - Python - London EC1N

Who: The London Python Group

What: Technical talk - The inaugural 7 pm meetup for those interested in Python. Jonathan Hartley will demonstrate code to generate interesting geometry in Python for display at 60 fps with OpenGL – an "abbreviated & improved version" of a previous EuroPython presentation. To be repeated at PyCon.

25th February - PHP - London N1

Who: PHP London

What: PHP UK Conference 2011 - A one day event encompassing a range of topics around the subject of PHP

Cost: £130+VAT
