Selected events in the UK and elsewhere in December

The H Community Calendar presents the coming month's events in various open source, development, Linux, Unix and other communities, from multi-day conferences to user group get-togethers.

1st 1 December - Raspberry Pi - Leeds

Who: CPC & LeedsHack
What: The CPC Pi Hack – a 24 hour challenge which will see 100 competitors, working as either individuals or teams, pitted against each other as they attempt to build something great while incorporating Raspberry Pi.

4th 4 December - Search - London WC1A

Who: London Open Source Search Social
What: User group meeting – informal meetup with discussions on aspects of search technology.

4th 4 December - R - London EC3V

Who: LondonR
What: LondonR User Group Meeting – an "Introduction to Lattice" workshop will be followed by three presentations: "R as a Web Service: Getting R and D3 talking JSON", "Using Lattice to plot grouped data" and "Producing Animated Graphs from R without having learn any other software".

6th 6 December - PHP - London SE1

Who: PHP London
What: PHP "PubCon" – regular monthly social meeting, which, this month, includes a talk on "Using Vagrant, Chef and Virtual Box in Your Development Environment" by Jeremy Quinton.

6th 6 December - Lua - London EC1V

Who: London Lua User Group
What: User group meetup – this month will be focusing on Lua and games, with Paul Cuthbertson giving a talk on "Developing a Lua VM in JavaScript".

6th 6 December - Perl - London W2

Who: London Perl Mongers
What: London.pm Social – regular monthly social meeting.
Cost: Free (no registration necessary)


7th 7 December - Firefox OS - London WC2N

Who: Firefox OS meetup group
What: Firefox OS meetup – "Getting Started with Firefox OS" is all about getting hands on with FireFoxOS and hopefully making your first FireFoxOS application.

8th 8 December - Linux - London WC2N

Who: Greater London Linux User Group
What: Greater London LUG meetup – open for anyone to attend, especially to those interested in Linux, Android, Free software, open hardware and anything related to free software and its culture. Note: this event starts at 12:30pm.

8th 8 December - Scala - London EC2N

Who: London Scala Users' Group
What: Hack the Tower – all those interested in functional programming, play framework, MongoDB, Neo4j, Heroku & Force.com are invited to either join in building the new LSug community web site or work on any other web application or service.

10th 10 December - Ruby - London EC1V

Who: London Ruby User Group
What: Regular monthly meetup – after talks on "Going Native" from Frederick Cheung, "My tests run faster than your tests" from Joel Chippindale, and "Hermes, add wings to Ruby and Javascript development" from Claudio Ortolino, the meetup will continue in informal fashion in the pub.

12th 12 December - Linux - Reading

Who: Silicon Corridor Linux User Group
What: A regular social evening for Linux users in the Reading area.

12th 12 December - JBoss - London EC1V

Who: JBoss User Group
What: JBoss User Group meetup – a talk on "jBPM5 - The Evolution of BPM Systems" by Mauricio Salatino and Esteban Aliverti, followed by lightning talks and a problem solving session.

14 December - Alfresco - LOCATION

Who: London Alfresco Meetup Group
What: Alfresco Xmas meetup – no formal presentations this month, instead, a simple networking event with the opportunity to talk with Zaizi engineers and the Alfresco community.

17th 17 December - Groovy & Grails - London

Who: London Groovy & Grails User Group
What: LGGUG user group meetup – regular monthly meeting.

20th 20 December - Scala - London EC2R

What: LSug Scala coding dojo – a regular coding dojo session run on the third Thursday of every month.

Who: NHS Hack Day
What: NHS Hack Day – a weekend event that brings together doctors, nurses, developers, designers, and other "geeks who love the NHS" to create disruptive solutions to problems in the health space.

30 January 2013 - Python - London WC1B

Who: FLOSSUK
What: Intermediate Python training – a full-day tutorial for people who have experience in programming, but have just "picked up" Python and want to understand how it works.

12-13 February 2013 - Perl - London WC1H

What: Intermediate Perl training – a two-day course for people who want to advance from being “someone who uses Perl” to being a “Perl programmer”.
