A waiting game

The next stage of the experiment is a waiting game and if we're lucky we should have a culture of glowing bacteria in our dishes within a week or so. Those who have succeeded and would like to take the experiment further can then use the spare agar mixture to prepare some new Petri dishes – or the nearest thing they have, such as a sterilised jam jar – to which they can then transfer the brightest colonies from the original dish.

The future

When asked about the future Asa said: “I'd like to think that with what we're doing we could do some bigger, research-type projects”. Going on to say: “or in the classic hacking manner taking protocols that are difficult to recreate outside of a lab with expensive equipment, and bringing those into a DIY context.”

NESTA has teamed up with MadLab to host "DIYbio: Learning to code or learning to type?" as part of its Hot Topics series of events on Thursday 15th November 2012 in Manchester.
