Open Handset Alliance gets 14 new members

The Open Handset Alliance (OHA), the group initiated by Google to push the Android platform forward, has announced fourteen new members. The new members are Sony Ericsson, Vodafone, ARM, ASUStek, Softbank, Atheros, Garmin, Toshiba, AKM Semiconductor, Omron, Borqs, Teleca AB, Ericsson and Huawei Technologies. The new members range from phone manufacturers to chip designers, such as ARM, and includes wireless networking, mobile phone infrastructure builders, GPS navigation makers.

The OHA now has 47 members in total, including T-Mobile and HTC, who delivered the first Android based smartphone, the G1, earlier this year. As part of the announcement, Sony Ericsson confirmed their intention to build Android based phones, ARM announced they would be contributing their OpenMax DL libraries to the open source project and ASUStek said they planned to deliver Android based devices.
