Dirac video codec reaches version 1.0

The Dirac video codec, "Schrodinger", initially developed by the BBC research department, has reached an important milestone with the release of version 1.0. Dirac is a royalty-free video compression format designed for a wide range of uses, from web video, through to HD and up to near-lossless studio editing. The formats specification is available on the Dirac site.

The Dirac codec code provides a reference implementation of a codec for the Dirac format. The Dirac codec is multiply licensed under the GPLv2, MIT or MPL licenses; the exact conditions being specified in the Dirac FAQ. The "Schrodinger" code is available to download on the Dirac site. Applications which support Dirac include the recently updated VLC 0.92.
