Midnight Commander 02 February 2009 18:17
<once quite popular>
With all the recent angst over getting many new converts to Linux
eased into using the command line, I'm surprised at the lack of
articles showcasing Midnight Commander (mc).
More experienced users have moved on and learned the basic commands
and maybe some vi, and in fact probably sneer at mc as "cheating" (or
"not learning to do it properly").
But if a new user is shown that they can tend to file permissions,
ownership, viewing, editing, moving, copying, creating, etc., at the
command line simply by typing "mc", I think it would remove a great
deal of anxiety about, and resistance to, working at the console.
For example: When instructed to edit a file at the command line, type
"mcedit" and the filename. Only one command to remember. Forget
throwing them into the vi/emacs choice this early on.
The return to popularity for this amazing "cheat" requires little
else than a bit more exposure. It deserves it.
