Networks using Virtual PCs/servers

With Microsoft's Virtual Server and PC, the components vary slightly:

Emulated adapter: Guest systems often recognise the DEC 21140 as the structurally identical Intel Ethernet adapter.

Bridge Protocol: A "Virtual Machine Network Services" protocol must be linked to a network card on the host. This card can then be selected from a list at the virtual adapter end.

Host only: Microsoft's Loopback adapter is shipped with Windows. Via "Control Panel –> Hardware –> Add New Hardware", the admin can install it on the host as a network adapter, manually link it with the "Virtual Machine Network Services" protocol and select it as a network card at the virtual adapter.

NAT: "Shared Networking (NAT)" mode only exists in Virtual PC. In Virtual Server, the only way is to model it on the host via "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" and "Internet Connection Sharing" (ICS).

Isolated networks: Virtual PC offers a single isolated network when "Local Only" is selected. In Virtual Server, several isolated networks can be created via the "Internal Network" option.
