The e(fx)clipse developers have said they are proposing their software as a project at the Eclipse Foundation. e(fx)clipse provides the users of the Eclipse development environment with tools and a runtime environment for JavaFX. e(fx)clipse is already available under the Eclipse Public Licence and can either be downloaded as a ready-made Eclipse package or integrated into Eclipse via the p2 repository. The project was initiated by Tom Schindl, who has previously distinguished himself as a co-developer of Eclipse 4.x.

Sponsored by Oracle, JavaFX is a framework for creating user interfaces and is useful for both desktop and Rich Internet Applications (RIAs). At present, it is scheduled to become a part of Java 9 and is considered by Oracle as the designated successor of the Swing graphics library. JavaFX is expected to be fully open sourced by February 2013.

The proposal to add e(fx)clipse as an Eclipse Foundation project explicitly points out that providing quality support for JavaFX is important for the open source organisation because: "it is expected that many people will develop applications with it in the near future". An initial release of the code at Eclipse.org is proposed for the first half of 2013.
