Zend Enterprise, a company that has been among the main developers of PHP for many years, has released new versions of Zend Server and Zend Studio. New features in version 6 of Zend Server focus on handling the challenges that can arise in ensuring cooperation between developer teams and system operators.

These new features position the company as a member of the DevOps movement, which aims to provide techniques and processes to improve communication, cooperation and integration between developers and system operators. These techniques are now more important than ever, as there is a trend towards companies having to release increasingly smaller changes more often and having to test their applications on an ongoing basis. To remain competitive, companies no longer focus on major annual releases, instead issuing updates and patches at short intervals.

Talking to The H's associates at heise Developer, company co-founder and CTO Zeev Suravski said that the concept of Zend Server 6 revolves around preventing blame being passed between developers and system operators. The latest version includes new performance tools as well as improved privilege management and application monitoring components that help developers fix production issues.

One feature of note is the "Black Box Recorder" that provides detailed information on any flaws within an application, enabling both sides to investigate problems in a transparent way. This allows teams to save much of the time that they would otherwise require for troubleshooting. The software can also be integrated with the current version 2.x of the Zend Framework. Its API architecture allows tools such as Hudson, Jenkins, Travis CI, Nagios and HP OpenView to be used as part of the problem management infrastructure.

Another new release, the Zend Studio 10 development environment, is coordinated to match the new features in Zend Server 6 and Zend Framework. The developers have also added PHP 5.4 support and integrated PhoneGap and jQuery. This will allow developers to use the Eclipse-integrated IDE for the development of mobile and cloud applications (such as Red Hat's OpenShift or the Zend Developer Cloud).
