Xamarin, developer of tools for C#-based apps, has acquired LessPainful and announced a cloud service for testing mobile apps that uses LessPainful's technologies. The Test Cloud can be used for automated interface tests as well as tests on actual physical devices. Xamarin announced this at its Evolve 2013 conference, an event attended by around 600 developers in Austin, Texas.

The Xamarin service generates reports on failed tests and offers Continuous Integration options that allow developers to tackle issues early. Supported Continuous Integration environments include Jenkins, JetBrains' TeamCity, and Microsoft's Team Foundation Server, which can all be incorporated into the test environment via plugins.

Test scripts can be written either using LessPainful's custom Calabash Ruby implementation or from within Xamarin Studio or Visual Studio in C#. The service is suitable for apps that were developed with Xamarin products as well as other frameworks, including those that were written in native Objective-C for iOS. Only apps for Android and iOS are currently supported.

The service is currently in its beta phase; a final version is scheduled to become generally available in the third quarter of 2013.
