Vagrant distances itself from Virtualbox

Vagrant, the open source developer environment generation tool, is being re-engineered to no longer be dependent on VirtualBox, Oracle's open source desktop virtualisation platform. Vagrant allows the creation of "boxes" which contain all the assets needed to provision a fresh virtual machine. With a single command, Vagrant can create a machine from a box and bring it up. Vagrant was designed for developers who need to bring up multiple virtual machines, repeatably and easily in a testing environment. Vagrant 1.0 appeared in March this year.

The change was noticed in Vagrant's commit log with the merging of a "machine abstraction" branch. The work is far from complete though; VirtualBox is still the hard coded virtual machine provider, shared folders and networking need to be redesigned to accommodate other providers and there's no way to select what other providers are there. Nevertheless, the developers call this a "BIG MILESTONE" in the development of the package.

The current stable version of Vagrant is version 1.0.3, available for download for as a Deb, RPM or Arch package for 32- and 64-bit systems or as a Windows or Mac OS X installer. Source code for the MIT-licensed application is available from the project's GitHub repository.
