As previously announced, Garage Games has released version 1.2 of its Torque 3D development environment as MIT-licensed open source code on its GitHub repository. This means that developers can now obtain the engine free of charge and won't need to pay any royalties for the games they develop with Torque. The package includes a comprehensive toolkit for programming 3D games. An overview of the most important features is available in an introductory tutorial that uses a first-person shooter as an example.

The Torque game engine has been developed for over ten years. It was first used commercially in the "Tribes 2" game in 2001. Torque 3D, which runs on Windows, can be used to create various game genres for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux; the games can also run in browsers, as demonstrated by Zworldo in 2010.

Garage Games is offering to refund customers who bought an engine licence after 1 September 2012. The company said that it plans to expand its software services department, which provides commercial support and training for Torque developers.
