Qt logo Version 2.6.0 of Qt Creator has been released with a change that, its developers say, will affect almost every user: the new release of the cross-platform integrated development environment (IDE) introduces "Kits" as a replacement for the "Targets" that were in versions 2.5 and earlier.

Previously, users added Targets to a project's configuration from predefined sets such as Desktop or Remote Linux. In 2.6.0, this workflow has been redesigned as Kits, which bundle together information about the target device, compiler, debugger and Qt version, along with other parameters, into a reusable configuration that can be defined by the user. These can be set up under the Build & Run option in the preferences. According to Eike Ziller, Senior Software Engineer at Digia, Kits should make it "easier for users to control their build and run environments, and to share configurations between projects."

Other changes in the IDE for Qt developers include additions to the qrc file editor such as directly opening and renaming files, support for full screen mode under Mac OS X 10.7 Lion or later, and improvements to C++11 support. The developers have also merged the Necessitas project's experimental support for Android into Qt Creator and added support for QNX/BlackBerry projects. Support for Symbian, however, has been dropped from the IDE due to a "missing maintainer" and MeeGo support was removed "due to complete irrelevance".

A detailed list of all of the fixes and new features can be found in the change log. Qt Creator 2.6.0 is available to download from the project's releases page. In the announcement for the new version, Ziller says that the upcoming second beta of Qt 5 will also include Qt Creator 2.6 based on Qt 5.
