Eclipse logo Wayne Beaton, evangelist and Community Director at the Eclipse Foundation, has been explaining why there appear to have been so many project terminations at the open source organisation lately. The recent shutdowns include Pave, PMF, EMFT Temporality, TMF TCS, EMFT Servus, EMFT Search, SBVR, SDO, Modeling Team Framework, Model Execute Framework (MXF), JCR Management, EMFT JS4EMF, GEMS, EMFT EMF4Net and AM3.

In a blog posting, Beaton says that there are more terminations to come and that terminations are a "pretty natural part of the process". Beaton says some projects are designed to be short lived, whereas others just lose development resources.

But part of the reason for there being more terminations at the moment is the project to migrate Eclipse projects off CVS repositories and onto Git or Subversion repositories, which only has 21 days to go. "Most of the terminated (and terminating) projects use CVS" notes Beaton, and with the CVS closure approaching, the projects that are unable to dedicate resources to the migration process are "facing reality and are just shutting down". So far, 75 per cent of Eclipse projects are using Git's distributed version control and 14 per cent are using Subversion. The remaining 11 per cent are still on CVS.

The project terminations are still not over says Beaton, pointing to the Eclipse Technology Termination Review, which is ongoing.
