Perforce has unveiled its new collaboration and code review application Swarm. Programmers can use it to hook into their colleagues' code and request feedback on their own code as and when required. It can also be used to display and review sections of code side by side.

Swarm can be integrated into a browser, allowing access from anywhere. It enables developers to personalise their reviews – with vertical or side-by-side comparisons for example – and comment right inside the code. Swarm supports distributed development with activity streams, project pages, notifications and a repository browser. It supports the production process through workflow functions, continuous integration hooks and automated deployment. It also offers the ability to integrate third-party tools.

Swarm uses the Perforce versioning engine for which the company is best known. This ensures that comments and discussions are automatically stored with code. Swarm can be used to review both code from Perforce tool Git Fusion and code stored using Perforce.

Like other Perforce products, Swarm is free to use for up to 20 users, for educational establishments and for open source projects. For commercial use, pricing starts at $5 per month for 1–100 users with lower rates for more users.
