Red Hat's Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) platform OpenShift has now formally left beta and has become an official Red Hat enterprise product. OpenShift Enterprise is based on technologies developed by Makara, a company that was taken over by Red Hat in November 2010. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and the JBoss middleware were incorporated as part of the base technologies of the product.

OpenShift Enterprise is a PaaS environment that is designed to be used on-premises in corporate data centres or deployed on public, private or hybrid clouds. It offers companies a cloud-based application platform that automates the management of resource provisioning and management of applications while offering developers an on-demand, scalable platform for their software. The system can also make use of RHEL's SE Linux support, securely subdividing nodes to give multi-tenancy. OpenShift Enterprise is Java EE 6-certified with rich support for Java applications in its cloud, but also offers polyglot support for applications written in Ruby, Python, PHP and Perl.

The Linux distributor first demonstrated OpenShift in May 2011. The platform uses various software components that have been fully available as open source software since the end of April 2012 as part of the OpenShift Origin project. OpenShift Origin is a project that is intended to be an upstream for the PaaS in the same way as the Fedora Linux project is the upstream source for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Red Hat announced its plans for marketing OpenShift at its Summit in June.

OpenShift Enterprise will be offered on an annual subscription basis. It can be deployed with a bare-metal hypervisor or traditional virtualisation platforms such as VMware or Red Hat's own Enterprise Virtualization solution. The developers also plan to provide OpenStack support.
