OpenNI logo Since November 2010, the OpenNI Consortium has been working on compatibility and interoperability between devices, applications and middleware for natural interaction (NI). In order for its 3D sensing framework and OpenNI SDK 2.0 to meet the needs of even more developers, the team behind the software development kit has cleaned up and improved its design and reworked the programming interface.

In version 2.0, the Algorithms API has been removed, with the middleware libraries taking on its functions. On the other hand, the developers have added support for Kinect devices with the Kinect SDK, support for translating depth pixels to colour map coordinates and for turning off the automatic white balance and exposure on colour CMOS sensors in PS1080 modules. The consortium says that the SDK also supports the latest generation of 3D sensors and improves conditions for working with multiple sensors and event-driven programming.

The source code for OpenNI SDK 2.0 is available on the OpenNI web site and is licensed under Apache License Version 2. Binaries are available, as beta versions, for Windows (XP with SP2 and above, 7) and Linux, with OS X support coming at a later date.
