Symfony logo If there has been one criticism of the open source Symfony PHP framework recently, it has been the excessive development times between releases. The development team has now responded by unveiling a new release process which will be adopted starting with Symfony 2.2 and strictly applied from version 2.4 onwards; the current version is Symfony 2.1.

In future, new versions will be released every six months. This period is divided into two phases: the first four months will be devoted to adding new features and extending existing functionality, while final two months will be used to fix bugs and otherwise stabilise the new version. The Symfony community will also be able to contribute to the planned release during this period.

Most releases will be supported for eight months, but every two years the development team also plans to publish a LTS (Long Term Support) version, which would be maintained for three years. SensioLabs, which is largely responsible for developing the framework, will also offer support for even longer periods on a commercial basis.

From Symfony 2.3 onwards, the developers plan to ensure backward compatibility 'at all costs'. If this proves impossible for a particular feature, it will be held back to the next major version: Symfony 3.0. Work on developing the next major iteration of the framework will commence when enough major features to justify a major new release have been assembled.
