UK-based software firm Micro Focus has launched a free-of-charge Personal Edition of its Enterprise Developer integrated development environment (IDE) for creating applications for IBM mainframe systems. The company says that Enterprise Developer Personal Edition, described as an entry-level version of the full product, is targeted at both professional developers and students.

To help bridge the gap between the various programming languages including COBOL, Java and C#, the scaled-down version of Enterprise Developer offers smart editing, syntax checking and a compiler for COBOL. The software is available for both Eclipse and Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. This allows developers who maintain mainframe applications to switch between different supported languages within the IDE.
