MetaCase has released version 5.0 of its MetaEdit+ environment for domain-specific languages (DSLs). MetaEdit+ provides a Workbench application to create modelling languages and the associated DSL while the MetaEdit+ Modeler gives users an IDE to load those modelling language definitions and use them to create applications. Modelling happens at a high abstraction level, dealing with objects and relationships between them. The Modeler application can then generate platform-specific code from the relationships that have been defined in the diagrams, matrices and tables.

MetaEdit+ 5.0 introduces Eclipse and Virtual Studio integration; however, the plugin for Visual Studio currently only supports Visual Studio 2010. Other improvements in the new version include view changes now being immediately represented in the models, new generator functions, and a reworked graphics engine with better anti-aliasing. Several changes in the UI enable users to more easily and quickly model relationships, and elements that define dynamic behaviour are more flexible. The new version of MetaEdit+ runs on more hardware and operating system combinations.

MetaEdit+ 5.0 is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Users will have to purchase separate licences for MetaEdit+ Workbench and MetaEdit+ Modeler.
