Java icon Java 8 and the closely linked Java Standard Edition (Java SE) version 8 are due for release in August of next year. Mark Reinhold, Chief Architect of the Java Platform Group at Oracle, has now announced the first members of the Expert Group responsible for the new version, which is part of the Java Community Process (JCP) program. Joining Reinhold in developing JSR (Java Specification Request) 337 will be Red Hat's Andrew Haley and IBM's Steve Poole. Google has also told Reinhold that it will nominate a representative, though it has yet to put forward a name.

A Java SE 8 Platform Umbrella JSR (337) web site has been created under the auspices of OpenJDK and two mailing lists have been set up. The first is intended for Expert Group members only, though postings will be publicly archived; the second is open to anyone who wants to get in touch with the standardisation committee or follow its work.
