The developers at Teehan+Lax Labs have created a tool that can combine images from Google Street View into a time-lapse animations. The open source Hyperlapse.js uses the Google Maps API v3, the Google Street View Panorama Utility, and the three.js JavaScript library to implement a web application. Users can define two points on a map as well as a point that is used to orient the camera and the application will automatically generate the time-lapse animation from these parameters.

The software is said to work best with Google Chrome – a fast CPU also helps when creating animations of long distances. The tool currently works best if long trips with smooth turns are selected. Interested users can try the software on Teehan+Lax Labs' Hyperlapse web site. Developers who download the code and install it themselves can further tweak the parameters of the software which results in smoother animations; the parameters on the demonstration site are set to relatively conservative values to preserve resources with many users using the tool at once.
